Windows Vista Enhancements for QuickBooks

Company:
Intuit, Inc.

Role:
Experience Designer

Dates:
2006 - 2007

Description:

Intuit had implemented QuickBooks 2007 to run on Windows Vista’s new security infrastructure but older versions of QuickBooks would have issues. The extent of these issues were unknown. I was the Design member of a cross-functional team responsible for informing users of possible problems and enabling them to easily transition to newer versions of QuickBooks. We planned and coordinated postal mail campaigns, support resources on the web, discount policies for users upgrading to the newest version of QuickBooks, email campaigns, phone support policies, and mechanisms to track customer feedback.

I created an experience map showing known issues for 3 legacy versions of QuickBooks on Windows Vista. The team used this map to educate the management team about the extent of the problems. It was a key document for the technical support team while fielding customer phone calls. The map drove a usability study of these pain points. The usability study data informed my design work for a custom pre-emptive warning message for QuickBooks.

I was the Intuit liaison with Microsoft for their Program Compatibility Assistance (PCA) project The PCA was a Microsoft-provided service to warn Vista users of possible incompatibilities with existing applications. I investigated and provided guidance on Intuit's options available via the PCA service, coordinated the internal discussions, and provided Microsoft's PCA service with the data regarding 33 Intuit SKUs that would receive tailored PCA messaging.
