With the Viewer’s new IA, the notification system received a design overhaul. Second Life's notifications included feedback provided to a user based on an action by that user, by another entity that affects the user, or by the system itself. These numerous book-keeping tasks were tracked and enforced by the Second Life system and conveyed to the user saliently enough to get their attention without being distracting.
When a friend logs out, a simple notification is generated. Users could view and act upon previous notifications. When many notifications arrived in a small time period and there was inadequate space to display them, an "overflow" notification was provided to indicate that notifications were being captured but not displayed. When logging in to Second Life, information was provided about the notifications captured while the resident was offline.
