Java applets, like other web elements, requested space on web pages. Before the Java content is completely loaded, Java could use this space as desired. Originally, Java did not use this opportunity and simply showed a static image, “the gray box”.
As Java adoption increased, I lead external and internal teams to better utilize this space to:
For the J2SE 5 release, current Java branding anchored a circular progress indicator was added to convey general network activity while a progress bar denoted specific loading activity. To raise awareness of Sun and Java, a java.com watermark and link was added. The animation was responsive and degraded gracefully at different "width/height" combinations.
Based on external feedback and Java brand updates, the animation was updated for Java SE 6.
