Java Look & Feel for JavaSE

Company:
Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Role:
Experience Lead (JLF & JLF GR), Contributor (JLF DG)

Dates:
1997 - 2006

Description:

The Java Look and Feel (JLF) provided an OS-independent design system for Java's GUI components. It defined a color palette, visual design language, and industry-standard interaction principles. The design consisted of common desktop controls including windows, buttons, menus, and the drag texture. I was Experience Design Lead for the original creation of the design system and coordinated enhancements for subsequent releases.

The Java Look and Feel Design Guidelines (JLF DG) were created to help internal and 3rd-party product teams build usable applications with the Java Look and Feel. The JLF DG provided guidelines on layout issues, graphic design instructions, and advanced UX patterns.

The Java Look and Feel Graphics Repository (JLF GR) was a free collection of a 100 commonly-used icons for use specifically with the Java Look and Feel. This repository used the style detailed in the JLF DG and was included in the JLF DG's second revision. In addition to the graphics themselves, the JLF GR includes mnemonics, shortcuts, and descriptions for each graphic. I drove the vision, funding, art direction, and interaction details for the repository.
