I lead the design of the Java platforms numerous installers from the 1996 - 2006 as the design goals, business goals, brand expression, and technical constraints evolved. The developer SDK had a standard installation experience. However, there were multiple install experiences for the consumer — a standard "double-click" installer, a web-delivered on-the-fly installer, and an automatic update. Experienced over 30 million times a month, the Java installers needed to provide a clean and unobtrusive experience while elevating the Java brand.
